Cockatoo Storm Warning Dreaming tells a story of protection, community, cultural knowledge, and the deep connection between people, animals, weather, and Country.

At the centre of the artwork is the Red and Black Cockatoo, represented as a messenger and guide. Within the story, the cockatoo carries warnings of changing weather and approaching storms. Its movement across Country signals to the people that conditions are shifting and that it may be time to prepare, seek shelter, and guide families and community members to safety.

The four circular symbols positioned around the painting represent four different tribal groups within the area. Each group has its own connection to Country and community, while also sharing the responsibility of looking after their people, protecting one another, and passing knowledge from generation to generation.

The swirling circular patterns throughout the background represent the heavy winds that gather and move across Country as storms approach. Their repeated movement creates a sense of energy and changing weather, showing the force of the wind building around the cockatoo.

The flowing lines and dotted pathways around the outside of the artwork represent the tracks and journeys of Aboriginal people who have travelled across Country for tens of thousands of years. These pathways symbolise movement, survival, ceremony, gathering, family, and the passing of knowledge through generations.

The repeated dots represent the many people who have walked these paths before us, while the continuous lines reflect the ongoing connection between past, present, and future generations.

Animals have always played an important role in understanding the natural environment. Changes in their movement and behaviour can be observed as signs that the weather and Country are changing. Within this story, the cockatoo becomes a symbol of awareness, communication, and warning, reminding people to pay attention to the signs around them.

Together, Cockatoo Storm Warning Dreaming represents community, protection, survival, guidance, and the knowledge carried through Country. It is a story about people looking after one another, listening to the land and animals around them, and using shared knowledge to guide their community safely through the storms of life.

Artwork Details:
This original artwork has been hand-painted on canvas using acrylic paints in traditional Aboriginal ochre-inspired colours, including earthy reds, blacks, whites and ochre tones. Fine glitter has been incorporated throughout selected areas of the artwork to catch the light and add extra depth, texture and visual impact.

The finished piece has been sealed with a clear gloss acrylic varnish, helping to protect the painted surface while enhancing the richness of the colours and giving the artwork a beautiful polished sheen.
