Perception Dreaming: Beyond the Shadow tells a deeply personal story of trauma, perception, accountability and the possibility of healing.

At the centre of the artwork is a person whose eyes remain closed while tears fall down their face. They have experienced deep pain throughout their life, carrying wounds that have shaped the way they see themselves, other people and the world around them.

For so long, closing their eyes became a form of protection. By continuing to remain '' blind '' and run from themselves, they didn't have to confront everything that lived beneath the surface—the hurt, fear, shame, anger and unresolved trauma that followed them through life.

But what once protected them eventually became their prison.

The closed eyes represent more than sadness. They represent the shadow—the parts of ourselves we fear confronting, the truths we avoid, the wounds we bury and the patterns we continue to repeat because facing them can feel more frightening than remaining within what is familiar.

The tears acknowledge that the pain is real. Trauma leaves its mark, and sometimes people learn to survive long before they ever learn how to truly live. Yet suffering doesn't mean that a person is destined to remain within the same cycle forever.

Throughout the artwork, the figure is surrounded by extraordinary colour. Bright blues, fiery reds and oranges, purples, flowers and elements of the natural world continue to flourish around them. This contrast is intentional.

The world around them has never been without beauty. They simply cannot see it while their eyes remain closed.

The colour represents everything that still exists beyond the shadow—love, connection, Country, growth, opportunity, forgiveness, belonging, hope and the possibility of another way of living.

Throughout life, hands may be extended toward us. People may love us, believe in us and try to guide us toward something better. But another person cannot do our healing for us. Eventually, there comes a moment when we must decide whether to continue repeating what we know or find the courage to confront what we carry.

That is where Beyond the Shadow begins.

To face the shadow is not to deny what happened to us. It is to acknowledge it without allowing it to determine everything that happens next. It means looking inward, accepting responsibility for the choices that are ours, seeking help where it is needed and recognising the patterns that keep returning us to the same pain.

Opening the eyes therefore becomes a symbol of awakening.

When we finally have the courage to look at ourselves truthfully, our perception can begin to change. And as perception changes, another world becomes visible—the same world that was there all along, filled with colour, beauty, love and light.

Perception Dreaming: Beyond the Shadow ultimately carries a message of hope. Our experiences may shape the lens through which we see life, but that lens does not have to remain unchanged forever.

The shadow is part of us, but it doesn't have to become all that we see. Sometimes the journey toward the light begins with having the courage to open our eyes and face what lives within.
