Spirit of the Land – Pre-Colonisation Dreaming tells the story of Australia before colonisation — a time when Country lived in balance, abundance, and deep spiritual connection.
This artwork reflects the beauty of the land in its natural state, rich with life, knowledge, and ancient wisdom passed down through countless generations. Beneath the earth lay precious minerals, fertile soils, and the sacred energies that sustained Country for thousands upon thousands of years.
The flowing swirls throughout the painting represent the water moving through the roots of the trees and across the land, nourishing the earth and keeping the ecosystems healthy and alive. Water was life, and every river, creek, and waterhole carried spirit, connection, and renewal for all living things.
For more than 80,000 years, Indigenous people cared for Country through knowledge, respect, and sustainable practices. The land was understood, protected, and nurtured through traditional ways of living. Cultural burning and backburning practices were used to care for the environment, reduce destructive fires, and maintain the natural balance of the land. The cycles of animals, trees, fruits, seasons, and waterways were deeply respected, ensuring that life continued in harmony for future generations.
During this time, Country provided abundance — abundant food, healthy waterways, rich soils, medicine plants, and thriving ecosystems. People lived alongside the land rather than against it, understanding that everything was connected through spirit, responsibility, and the Dreaming.
This artwork honours the strength, wisdom, and stewardship of Indigenous people before colonisation, while reminding us of the sacred connection between people, land, water, and life itself. It is a reflection of a time when Country was cared for, respected, and allowed to flourish in balance and harmony.
