Spirit of the Opal Dreaming tells a story of Country holding beauty, history and treasure beneath its surface — sometimes hidden from sight, but always present.

Inspired by the opal country surrounding Cunnamulla and Yowah in South-West Queensland, the artwork reflects a landscape known for producing extraordinary opal from beneath its hard, ancient earth. Yowah, west of Cunnamulla, is particularly renowned for the Yowah Nut and ironstone matrix opal, with opal discoveries in the area dating back to the late nineteenth century.

Across the painting, the rich earthy colours represent the layers of Country. Beneath what may first appear to be ordinary red and brown earth can lie flashes of extraordinary colour — blues, greens, pinks, purples and fiery tones revealed within opal. Queensland's opal country stretches through a vast belt of ancient sedimentary landscape, with precious opal occurring within ironstone and sandstone formations.

The colours flowing through the foreground represent this hidden beauty beneath Country. They are a reminder that something does not need to be visible on the surface for it to hold value, history or meaning.

The trees rising from the landscape represent life and resilience. Their roots reach into the same earth that holds the opal, connecting everything above the ground with what has formed beneath it over immense periods of time. They speak to the strength of Country and to the living relationship between the surface, the soil and the stories held below.

Above Country stretches the brilliant night sky. The countless stars mirror the colours hidden beneath the earth — as though the land and sky are reflecting one another. What glitters overhead has its counterpart below the ground: one world visible to everyone, and another waiting to be discovered.

For the people connected to this Country, however, the land is far more than what can be taken from beneath it. Country carries belonging, family, community, memory, story and connection. Free Shipping Australia Wide on all Original Art Canvas and Fine art prints. All products are sent fully-insured, un-stretched, and prints are carefully rolled in a protective tube for FREE Australia-wide shipping via Australia Post. International shipping costs are determined at checkout. 

Once payment has been received and your artwork has been dispatched, you will be sent a tracking number so you can follow your delivery through the Australia Post tracking system.

All artworks are packed with great care to ensure safe transit. Deliveries must be signed for upon arrival. Please note we do not deliver to PO Boxes. Most Australian deliveries arrive within 3–5 business days from dispatch. Any damages must be reported to Kunja Dreaming within 24 hours of delivery.
